3 Essential Steps to Avoiding Scams

Fraudsters and scammers are on the rise, and if you’re not careful, you could be their next target! These fraudsters are reaching out through phone calls, texts, emails, and even FaceTimes pretending to be a trusted family member, friend, or even financial institution. They can even “spoof” a phone number, or replicate it, so it shows up as a number that’s familiar to you to convince you they’re who they say they are.

We’re working hard on our end to fight the fraudsters, but you play an equally important role in putting an end to these scams. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself from becoming a victim of scams that can cost you thousands of dollars, countless hours of your time, and extensive mental and emotional wear and tear.

  1. DON’T GIVE OUT YOUR BANKING/PERSONAL INFORMATION: Whenever someone reaches out claiming to be from SPC Credit Union, remember this: we’ll never ask for more than the last four digits of your card number. We’ll also never request your online banking info or passwords through any calls, texts, or messages. If you’re communicating with someone who’s asking for this information, end the call or chat IMMEDIATELY!

  2. SOUND SUSPICIOUS? IT PROBABLY IS! If you get a fishy call or text, don’t get involved. Hang up right away and give us a call directly at 843.332.4506 to check if the message is legit.

  3. URGENT MESSAGE? DON’T TAKE THE BAIT! If you receive messages that instruct you to take action immediately, this is a tell-tale sign of a scam. DO NOT respond to threats, urgent messages, or similar communications.
