Attention Members: Your Personal Car Loan Interest May Be Tax-Deductible

Recent legislation has introduced a change to the tax treatment of car loan interest.  You may be able to claim a tax deduction on interest paid for your personal-use car loan from 2025-2028. For official IRS guidance on this provision, visit this page on the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/one-big-beautiful-bill-act-tax-deductions-for-working-americans-and-seniors to find qualifying vehicle criteria.

  • Recent legislation allows many individuals to claim a tax deduction on interest paid for certain personal-use car loans which closed between December 31, 2024 through December 31, 2028. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances, such as your income, whether the vehicle is used for personal purposes, and where its final assembly occurred. It is important to note that tax laws can change, and it is your responsibility to determine if you qualify for this deduction. This is not tax advice. Please consult a qualified tax advisor to understand how this applies to your specific situation.

There are some certain, specific situations where car loan interest may also be deductible where you use your vehicle for your business or self-employment. Consult a tax advisor to understand how this applies to your specific situation.

  • 2025 Tax information for your auto loan interest can be found on your December 2025 statement from SPC Credit Union. You can find this information at the bottom of your paper or e-statement under “LOAN ACCOUNTS,” titled “TOTAL INTEREST PAID YEAR-TO-DATE.”

  • We are not required to provide a separate statement for car loan interest for calendar year 2025. In addition, there will be no tax statement going forward for accounts that do not have a vehicle with a qualifying VIN pursuant to the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act: “No Tax on Car Loan Interest.” If you feel your vehicle qualifies, please consult the IRS https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/one-big-beautiful-bill-act-tax-deductions-for-working-americans-and-seniors or your tax advisor to learn more.

  • Please contact Member Services (inquiries@spccu.org) if you cannot access or locate your December 2025 loan account statement.
