Culture, Cooperation – and CASH! SC Credit Unions Team Up For Innovative Campaign
Armed with a video camera, a hot car and cold cash, a team of young adults will crisscross the state of SC in a unique, multi-year credit union awareness campaign. Discover Our Culture, a cooperative effort sponsored by over half of the SC credit unions, will raise awareness of the unique cultures, people & places of SC, as well as the positive aspects of credit unions. For South Carolinians, there’s an added bonus: the constant chance to win various amounts of CASH during the course of the campaign!
This innovative campaign is sure to generate a lot of excitement across the State, and SPC Cooperative Credit Union is pleased to be a part of this effort. “Discover Our Culture will be a fun and interesting look at the wide variety of people and places that make life here in SC so unique,” said SPC CEO, Bill Varn. “ Along the way, we think this campaign will make more people aware of just how special credit unions are, and how we are working together to make life better for all South Carolinians.”
Discover Our Culture features the “CU CRU,” a group of young adults who travel to SC festivals, historic sites and other unique places in the “CU CRUZER.” The CU Cru videotapes and blogs about the special people and events they encounter in their travels. These people and events are then spotlighted on the campaign web site, www.itpays2cu.org.
Another exciting feature of the multi-year campaign is the “itpays2CU” program, which allows people (existing members or not) to win prize money from the CU Cru in two ways. Visitors to www.itpays2cu.org can register to win BIG MONEY prizes by correctly answering 2 or 3 easy questions about credit unions. Also, people who display the campaign car magnet on their vehicle are eligible to win cash on the spot if the CU CRUZER sees them out on the road.
So be sure to log on to www.itpays2cu.org and take the quiz, and stop by any SPC Cooperative Credit Union branch and pick up a campaign car magnet to display on your car. And be on the lookout for the CU CRUZER – if they C U, you may be one of the lucky people cheering about how “itpays2CU!!!”

Relay for Life Update
Thanks so much for helping SPC raise just under $14,000.00 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life! We raised a total of $13,813.50 from January through April 2009 in donations for the event in Darlington County. The funds were accumulated by collecting change from deposits, selling BBQ lunch plates, washing members’ windshields at the drive-up teller line, and selling Relay for Life luminaries, business signs and hope bracelets. The American Cancer Society will use the money to help researchers find a cure, educate communities, and offer assistance to those currently fighting the disease. Visit the American Cancer Society online at www.relayforlife.org for more details on this great event.

SPC Wins 1st Place
in Three Community Involvement Competitions
SPC received 1st Place Awards for Desjardins Youth Financial Education, Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility, and Louise Herring Philosophy in Action. Desjardins Youth Financial Education award recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy. The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Program honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities. And the Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action recognizes credit unions that extraordinarily demonstrate the practical application of credit union philosophy which distinguishes credit unions from other financial service providers. All three awards are sponsored by the South Carolina Credit Union League and CUNA & Affiliates.
SPC recognizes Duane Elmore, manager of the Hartsville Piggly Wiggly, as the SPC Third Quarter Hometown Hero. Mr. Elmore was nominated as SPC’s Hometown Hero because many believe he demonstrates great kindness every day to those around him. In addition to being the hero of his wife, three daughters and six grandchildren, Mr. Elmore maintains a lasting commitment to youth throughout our community. Over the past 34 years, he has provided many teens with their first jobs and paychecks. In fact, a number of young adults that got their first job from Mr. Elmore years ago continue to work under him today. “Leading by example, he never asks someone to do something he hasn’t done himself. On any given day you can find him carrying out groceries for a customer, rain or shine,” said Julie Burch, Mr. Elmore’s daughter. Others are quick to note that Mr. Elmore is always glad to help out with donations for civic and community events with products and gift cards. Thanks for all you do for our community, Mr. Elmore!
If you would like to nominate a “Hometown Hero,” email Linda Weatherford at LHWeatherford@spccu.org.
